What Is an Age Calculator?
An age calculator turns a date of birth into an exact age. Instead of simply subtracting birth years, it accounts for months and days that have already passed, so two people born in the same year can correctly have different ages. This matters for school enrolment, sports age groups, job applications, driving and retirement planning, insurance forms, and any document that asks for an age on a particular date rather than today.
Our calculator also gives you the totals behind that headline age: total months, total weeks and total days lived, plus the number of days until your next birthday. Those totals are useful when a form asks for age in months, when you are planning a milestone birthday, or when you simply want a clearer sense of time. All of the maths happens instantly, in your browser, and your dates are never uploaded or stored.
How to Use the Age Calculator
- Enter your date of birth. Use the date picker, or type the date in the format your browser shows.
- Check the age-at date. It defaults to today. Change it if you need an age on a past or future date, for example the date of an exam, a trip or a job start.
- Click Calculate age. Your exact age in years, months and days appears straight away, together with the totals below it.
- Read the extra figures. Total months is handy for babies and young children, total days is useful for anniversaries, and days until your next birthday helps with party planning.
- Start again if needed. Press Clear to reset the dates and calculate another age.
Key Features and Benefits
- Exact, not approximate. The result accounts for month lengths and leap years, so you get years, months and days, not just a rounded year count.
- Age on any date. Calculate an age today, on a birthday, or on any date in the past or future.
- Useful totals. See total months, total weeks and total days at a glance.
- Next-birthday countdown. Find out exactly how many days remain until the next birthday.
- Private by design. Dates are processed locally in your browser and are not sent to a server.
- Free and unlimited. No signup, no account, no limits. Calculate as many ages as you need.
- Works on any device. Use it on a phone, tablet or desktop in any modern browser.
Worked Examples
Example 1 - A birthday today. If you were born on 2 November 1990 and you check your age on 2 November 2026, the calculator shows 36 years, 0 months and 0 days. Your next birthday is 365 days away, because 2027 is not a leap year and your birthday has only just passed.
Example 2 - Partway through a year. Someone born on 15 March 2010, checked on 2 November 2026, is 16 years, 7 months and 18 days old. In total that is 199 months, and the calculator also shows the equivalent total weeks and total days, which saves you converting those figures by hand.
Example 3 - Age on a future date. A child born on 20 June 2021 will be 5 years, 2 months and 11 days old on 31 August 2026, useful for checking school or nursery eligibility on a fixed start date. Simply set the age-at date to the date that matters and read the exact result.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is exact age calculated?
The calculator subtracts the birth year, month and day from the age-at date, borrowing days from the previous month and months from the previous year where needed. This gives a true years, months and days result rather than a rough decimal age.
Does it handle leap years?
Yes. Because the calculation uses real calendar dates, leap years and months of different lengths are handled automatically. A person born on 29 February has a birthday counted in the same way as any other date, and the next-birthday count follows the calendar.
Can I calculate an age in the past or future?
Yes. Change the age-at date to any date you need. The tool will show the exact age on that date, provided the date of birth is not after it.
Is my date of birth stored or shared?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your date of birth is not uploaded, saved or shared, and closing the page removes it from view.
Why is the result different from simply subtracting years?
Subtracting years alone ignores whether this years birthday has happened yet. For example, someone born in December is a year younger for most of the year than a simple year subtraction would suggest. The exact calculation corrects for that.
