Why Merge PDFs in the Browser?

People often need to combine separate PDFs into a single document: a job application with a cover letter and CV, a set of invoices for one month, scanned pages from a report, or chapters of a study guide. Doing that online usually means uploading private documents to a remote server, waiting for processing, and then downloading the result. That can be slow, and it raises questions about where your files go and how long they are kept.

This tool takes a different approach. It uses a well-known JavaScript PDF library, pdf-lib, loaded in your browser, to join the files on your own device. Your PDFs are processed locally in the browser and never uploaded to a server. That means the tool works even for sensitive documents, and you do not need to create an account or share your files with a third party.

How to Use the Merge PDF Tool

    • Add your PDFs. Drag and drop PDF files into the dashed area, or click Choose PDF files and select more than one file at once.
    • Check the list. The chosen files appear in order. Remove any file you do not want by clicking Remove beside it.
    • Click Merge PDFs. The tool joins the files in the listed order. This usually takes only a few seconds, depending on file size.
    • Download merged.pdf. When merging is complete, click Download merged.pdf to save the combined file to your device.
    • Start again if needed. Press Clear files to remove the list and merge a different set of PDFs.

    Key Features and Benefits

    • Private by design. Files are processed locally in your browser and never uploaded to a server.
    • Multiple files at once. Select several PDFs in one go, or drag and drop them into the tool.
    • Order preserved. Pages appear in the combined PDF in the order of the files you list.
    • Simple download. The merged file is offered as merged.pdf, ready to save, share or print.
    • No signup or install. Nothing to download, no account, and no software to install on your device.
    • Works on any device. Use it on a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone in any modern browser.
    • Free and unlimited. Merge PDFs as often as you need, at no cost.

    Worked Examples

Example 1 - A job application. You have a cover letter as one PDF and a CV as another. Add the cover letter first, then the CV, click Merge PDFs, and download a single merged.pdf that a recruiter can open and read from start to finish.

Example 2 - Monthly invoices. You have four weekly invoices as separate PDFs. Add all four in date order, merge them, and you have one tidy monthly file to send to your accountant or store for your records.

Example 3 - A study pack. You have three chapters saved as separate PDFs. Merge them in chapter order into one document, so you can search, bookmark and print the whole pack without switching between files.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

No. Files are processed locally in your browser and never uploaded to a server. The only network request is the small pdf-lib library file itself, which contains the merging code, not your documents.

How many PDFs can I merge?

There is no fixed limit in the tool, but very large files or a very large number of files will use more memory and take longer. For best results, merge a handful of typical documents at a time and check the result before merging more.

Can I change the order of the files?

The merged PDF follows the order in which files appear in the list. Add files in the order you want them, and remove and re-add a file if you need to change its position.

What if a PDF is password-protected or damaged?

Password-protected, corrupted or otherwise unreadable PDFs cannot be merged by the tool, and you will see an error message. Open the file in a PDF reader first to check that it is valid, and remove any password protection if you are allowed to do so.

Will the merged PDF keep the original quality?

Yes, in general. The tool copies the pages from each source PDF into the new document without re-rendering them, so text and images should keep their original quality.

After merging, it is worth opening merged.pdf and checking the page order, especially if you combined files from different sources. A quick check now saves confusion later, particularly for applications, invoices and other documents where order matters.
